Stories Denise Denise, age 15, has been in foster care for 6 years. Judy Taylor, her foster mother, told us Denise was sent down to Poulsbo from Bellingham, Washington, because her 11th foster placement "didn't fit" and she was falling in with the wrong crowd at school. Her grades were borderline C's and D's. Denise has been with the Taylor's for six months. She is a sophomore at the local high school. Since moving to Poulsbo, Denise's grades have improved 1 grade point to B's. She also discovered singing in the high school choir. The request: Funding for Denise to go with the choir to sing at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Her foster mom said she had called "all my friends and relatives and everyone else I can think of" to raise the $1,500 needed for Denise's trip. With great delight SeaStar joined Community and Family Services in providing support for Denise's choir trip. After her New York experience, Denise wrote: "Thank you so much for the donations to make it possible for me to go to New York. I had an awesome time. I went to China Town, Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square, and the Today Show. We sang at Carnegie Hall! I had a blast." A milestone experience in her young life. High School Graduation For a number of years, one of the foster child licensing agencies sponsored a high school graduation for the 40 foster kids graduating in our county. This year the event was taken over by dedicated state social workers. At the celebration, seniors received a camera, luggage, photo albums and gift cards. A photographer provided 5 x 7 pictures of each teen. SeaStar joined with other foster care agencies in sponsoring this event. . Carrie Carrie is a 12 year old Native American. She wanted to play clarinet in the school band. SeaStar was able to purchase this instrument for her. We are expecting great things from you, Carrie. |
