Foster Children - Statistics

In Kitsap County, Washington, there are approximately 600 children in the foster care system.

This is enough to fill 3 elementary schools.

A recent Casey Family Foundation study of Washington and Oregon foster children found 53% had been sexually assaulted and 26% physically abused.

Sexually assaulted:   3l8 (53%)  5 school buses full of children

Physically abused:    156 (26%)  3 school buses full of children

One in six children in foster care was moved to 3 or more homes within the first year.*  That is 100 children in our county.

About 19,000 Washington State children received foster care or group care services every year, with approximately 9,000 children in out-of-home care at any given time.*
